Ottoman Dimensions: Height, Size, and the Three Jobs
We measured 45 ottomans. The median height is 19 inches, and that one number decides whether a piece works as a footrest, an extra seat, or a coffee table. How to size an ottoman to the sofa it serves.
Standard ottoman dimensions
Measured across the 45 ottomans in the Alcovio catalog (the same method as standard furniture height):
- Height: 16 to 20 inches, median 19. The number that governs everything below.
- Width: 18 to 58 inches. Small poufs sit under 24; cocktail ottomans that replace a coffee table run 36 to 54.
- Depth: 18 to 30 inches on rectangular pieces.
- Shape: rectangular is most common, then square and round.

Height is the whole decision
An ottoman is the rare piece that does three different jobs, and all three are set by the same measurement: how its top compares to your sofa seat height.
- As a footrest, you want it level with the seat or up to two inches below. Higher than the seat and your legs angle upward, which is exactly the position that makes a footrest uncomfortable after ten minutes.
- As an extra seat, it needs to be within the normal seating band, roughly 16 to 20 inches, or guests are perched too low to get up from easily.
- As a coffee table, the same level-with-the-seat rule applies that governs coffee table height — with one extra requirement, below.
So measure your sofa seat first. That single number tells you the ottoman height to shop for, and it is why the catalog clusters so tightly at 19.
If it has to work as a coffee table
An upholstered top is soft, so a drink will not sit flat on it. Two features solve that, and they are worth filtering for:
- A tray top or flip-top gives you a hard surface where you need one. We tag these on the site so you can filter for them.
- Storage inside is the other reason to choose an ottoman over a coffee table. About a fifth of the ottomans we measured open up.
If neither applies, plan on a loose tray, and size the ottoman to about two-thirds the length of the sofa the way you would a coffee table.
Clearance around it
Leave 14 to 18 inches between the ottoman and the sofa: close enough to reach with your feet, wide enough to walk past. If it is doubling as a coffee table for a seated group, keep that gap at the tighter end so people can reach it without standing.
