What Size Should a Coffee Table Be?
We measured 188 coffee tables. Half sit 16 to 18.5 inches high, rectangular tops run 41 to 54 inches wide and 26 to 36 deep, and round ones 36 to 41 across. The honest answer to "what size" is a range set by the sofa beside it. The real numbers, and the two rules that beat any catalog average.
The standard coffee table dimensions
Coffee table sizes get quoted as round numbers. These are not guesses: they are the measured spread across 188 coffee tables in the Alcovio catalog, each verified to a tenth of an inch (see standard furniture height for the method). Each range below is the middle half of the catalog, so a quarter of tables sit below it and a quarter above:
- Height: 16 to 18.5 inches, median 17. This is the widest-varying dimension of any furniture we measured, and it is the one that matters most.
- Width: 41 to 54 inches, median 48 on rectangular and square tops; smaller accent tables run under 36, grand rectangular pieces past 60.
- Depth: 26 to 36 inches, median 30 on those same tops.
- Diameter: 36 to 41 inches, median 38 for round and oval tables.

Height is set by the sofa, not the catalog
The reason coffee-table height varies so much is that it answers to the seat beside it, not to a standard. The rule: the top should sit level with the sofa seat, or up to two inches below, which is the reach that lets you set a glass down without looking. A low modern sofa wants a 15-inch table; a traditional one wants 18 or 19. Measure your sofa seat height first; the full rule is in the coffee-table height rule.
Width is set by the sofa too
The proportion that looks right is about two-thirds the length of the sofa. A 90-inch sofa pairs with a table around 48 to 54 inches; a loveseat wants something in the 30s. Depth, and the walkway that really governs it
A coffee table's own depth is 26 to 36 inches on most rectangular tops, but the number that governs the room is the gap around it. Leave 14 to 18 inches between the table and the sofa (close enough to reach, wide enough to walk and to clear knees), and keep a walkway on the open sides. A round or oval table buys back some of that clearance at the corners, which is why it often wins in a tight room; round versus rectangular has the plan-view comparison, and oval coffee tables are the shape that does it without losing length. An upholstered ottoman does the same job at the same heights with no corners at all.
What to measure before you buy
Three numbers, in order: your sofa seat height (sets the table height), your sofa length (sets the width), and the clear floor between the sofa and the far walkway (sets the depth you can afford).
