Sleeper Sofa Dimensions: The Sofa You See and the Bed You Don't
A sleeper sofa is two footprints in one listing — and retailers usually only show you the closed one. How to check the open depth, what mattress sizes actually mean inside a sofa, and the clearance the fold-out mechanism demands.
Two footprints, one listing
Closed, a queen sleeper is an ordinary 84-inch sofa. Open, it projects 80 to 90 inches from the wall — the sofa's own depth plus the unfolded deck. That open depth is the number that decides whether the guest room works, and it's the one most listings bury or omit.
The rule of thumb when the retailer doesn't state it: open depth ≈ sofa depth + mattress length minus about 10 inches (the mattress head tucks where the seat cushions were). For a 37″-deep queen sleeper with an 80″ mattress, plan on roughly 90″ wall-to-toe. Then add walking space to actually get into the bed — 24 inches along at least one side.
What the sizes really are
Sleeper mattress sizes don't perfectly match bedroom mattresses — they're usually the same width but a few inches shorter, and always thinner (4–5″):
- Twin: ~38″ × 72″ — fits in a chair-and-a-half or a 55–60″ loveseat.
- Full: ~53″ × 72″ — the workhorse; needs a sofa around 70″ wide.
- Queen: ~60″ × 74″ — the standard "real bed" feel; sofa runs 80″+.
- King: rare, found in sectionals 100″ and up.
On Alcovio the sleeper size is a filter of its own — jump straight to queen sleepers or browse all sleeper sofas and narrow by the closed width your wall allows.
The clearance nobody measures
The fold-out mechanism needs room to swing: the deck arcs up and over the front rail before it settles. Keep the coffee table at least 30 inches from the sofa's front edge if you plan to open the bed without moving furniture every time — or pick a table light enough to slide.
Also check bed height: sleeper decks sit 12–14 inches off the floor, lower than a regular bed. Fine for most guests; worth knowing for anyone with mobility constraints (our accessibility clearance guide covers the numbers).
Weight and the stairs question
The mechanism adds 60–100 pounds over the same sofa without it. That matters twice: delivery (a queen sleeper rarely comes apart the way a modular sectional does) and moving day. If the sofa has to climb a switchback stair, compare the boxed dimensions against our will-it-fit-through-the-door guide before ordering.
Every sleeper on Alcovio lists the closed width, depth, and height it was sold with — start from the size that fits closed, then verify the open depth against your room.
