Nightstand Height: Match It to Your Mattress
Mattress depth throws off nightstand height. A height-matching guide with dimension-filtered search.
The 2-to-4-inch window
A nightstand works when its top lands within 2 to 4 inches of your mattress top, level or slightly above. From flat on your back, reaching slightly up and over to a surface you can see beats groping down toward one you can't, and a top an inch or two above the mattress keeps a half-asleep arm from sweeping a water glass onto the floor.
The catch: "mattress top" is not one number anymore.
Your bed is taller (or shorter) than the standard
Mattress-top heights commonly run 24 to 27 inches, but the real spread is wide:
- Platform beds, 18 to 22 inches. A low frame plus a 10 to 12 inch mattress. The modern default, and dramatically lower than what most nightstands were built for.
- Standard bed with foundation, 23 to 26 inches. The height the furniture industry still assumes.
- Tall and hybrid stacks, 27 to 30 inches. A 14 to 16 inch hybrid mattress on a box spring and frame climbs right out of nightstand range.
Measure yours: floor to the top of the mattress, pressed down a bit if it's plush. That single number drives everything below.
The thick-mattress problem
Most nightstands are built 24 to 26 inches tall, sized for the 23 to 26 inch standard bed. Put one next to a 30 inch hybrid stack and the top sits 4 to 6 inches below the sleeping surface: outside the window, and visibly sunken from across the room. Platform beds miss the other way: a 26 inch nightstand looms 5 inches over a 21 inch mattress and puts the lamp at eyebrow height.
So shop by your measured number, not by the word "nightstand":
- Mattress top 18 to 22 inches (platform): look for tables 18 to 24 inches tall.
- Mattress top 23 to 26 inches (standard): the classic 24 to 26 inches nightstand.
- Mattress top 27 to 30 inches (tall): you want 26 to 30 inches, which usually means leaving the nightstand aisle entirely.
When a nightstand isn't a nightstand
Nothing about a bedside table requires it to be sold as one. End tables cover a wider height range than purpose-built nightstands, and the end table filters work on exact dimensions, which is precisely what a 29 inch mattress top needs. The matching logic is the same law that governs every surface in the house; the coffee table height rule walks through the rest, and if you're pairing a table to a sofa instead, the arm-matching guide applies.
One last check before buying: storage placement. A tall table with one fixed shelf near the floor holds less than a shorter table with a drawer up top, and a drawer you use nightly is worth 2 inches of theoretical height match. Measure, pick the window, and let the drawer break the tie.
