Furnishing a Small Apartment: Every Inch Counts

Start with a floor plan, not a wish list

In a small apartment the furniture doesn't get to pick its size; the room already did. So the first purchase is a tape measure. Map every wall segment between openings, note where the radiator, outlets, and window sills fall, and write the numbers down: you're building the spec sheet your furniture has to pass. The six measurements that matter are the same in 500 square feet as in 3,000; there's just no slack left when you miss one.

Budget clearances before furniture

Every piece costs you walking space, and the walking space has minimums:

• 30-36 inches for a main pathway, the route from door to sofa to kitchen. You can cheat to 30 inches; below that you turn sideways daily.
• 24 inches for a secondary path nobody walks with a laundry basket.
• 36 inches from dining table edge to the wall, just to pull a chair out and sit down. This is the number that kills most small-room tables.
• 14-18 inches between sofa and coffee table, the one clearance that is happily small.

Subtract the pathways from the room first. What's left over is your furniture budget, in inches, and it's usually less than you hoped.

The small-space dimension classes

• Loveseats, 48-72 inches wide. A full sofa runs 78 to 90 inches; a loveseat saves two feet of wall and still seats two. The sofa sizing guide covers the wall-to-width math.
• Round dining tables, 42-48 inches. No corners to clip walking past, and a 42 inch round seats four in the footprint a rectangle wastes.
• Extendable tables. Buy the collapsed dimension for daily life and borrow the extended one for dinner parties. The extendable tables category filters by both.
• End tables that moonlight. A 24 to 26-inch-tall end table beside the bed is a nightstand; beside the sofa it's an end table. In a studio it will be both in the same week.

Don't forget the front door

Small apartments come with small access: 30 inch interior doors, tight landings, stairwells with a turn. A sofa clears when its diagonal depth or its height with the legs off clears the opening, and boxed dimensions run 3 to 6 inches over the listed ones. Check the route before checkout, not after. Tighter than an apartment and the rules change again: RVs, vans, and tiny homes start at 24 to 26 inch doorways.

Shop by the numbers you wrote down
